MANUGHAT: The Manu River has turned dangerously swollen following a day of continuous heavy rainfall, flooding Ghatgachho Para in Manughat and leaving nearly 36 families homeless, officials said.
The situation reportedly turned severe as floodwaters rose to waist-height in many homes, forcing residents to abandon their houses. Acting swiftly, the local administration relocated the affected families to safer locations, including a nearby school, an Anganwadi centre, and the Manu Town Hall.
On receiving information about the flooding, Manu-Chailengta MDC Hollywood Chakma rushed to the affected area to assess the situation firsthand. He was accompanied by Sub-Divisional Magistrate Subrata Das and other administrative officials, who inspected the flood-hit locality and assured residents of continued support from the administration.
Officials said the situation is being closely monitored and that relief and rescue operations remain underway. Essential supplies and temporary shelter arrangements have reportedly been made for the displaced families at the relocation centres.
However, with rainfall continuing in the region, authorities have warned of the possibility of further flooding and have repeatedly urged local residents to remain alert and follow safety advisories issued by the administration.
No casualties have been reported so far in connection with the flooding.
