Agartala: With Jamai Sashthi falling tomorrow, traders across local markets have set up colourful stalls displaying ritual essentials, yet business this year has been markedly slower compared to previous years, vendors said.
Overcast skies and intermittent showers through the day have kept both shoppers and sellers on edge. Many traders complained that the unpredictable weather, with rain arriving every now and then, has discouraged customers from stepping out to shop, directly affecting sales volumes ahead of the festival.
Adding to the subdued mood, this year’s “mal mash” — considered an inauspicious lunar month in the Bengali calendar — means newly married sons-in-law will not be observing their first Jamai Sashthi this year, traditionally one of the most elaborate celebrations for new grooms. This has reportedly reduced overall demand in the market.
Despite the setback, prices of essential ritual items have remained largely affordable. Stalls are seen brimming with karamcha (Bengal currant), seasonal flowers, durba grass, bel leaves, and other items required for the puja and feast associated with the occasion.
Traders are hoping for clearer skies tomorrow to salvage what remains of the festive season’s business.
