AGARTALA: Police attached to NCC police station on Tuesday apprehended Swapan Sutradhar, the prime accused and alleged mastermind behind the murder of Samir Das in the Kathaltali area, from the Indranagar locality.
Das was allegedly hacked to death with a sharp weapon late Monday night near the Kathaltali Shani Mandir, reportedly over a long-standing personal enmity with the accused. The accused had fled the scene immediately after the attack, prompting a massive manhunt involving additional security personnel, a forensic team and a dog squad.
Acting on specific information, a police team launched a search operation and eventually traced and detained Sutradhar from Indranagar. He has been taken into custody for further interrogation in connection with the murder.
Police said a detailed investigation is underway to ascertain the complete sequence of events leading to the murder and to verify whether anyone else was involved in planning or executing the attack.
The arrest has brought some relief to the victim’s family and residents of Kathaltali, who had been demanding swift action and stringent punishment for the perpetrator since the incident came to light on Monday night.
Further legal proceedings against the accused are expected to follow.
