Kailasahar Police Station Gheraoed Over Delhi Student Crackdown, Rahul Gandhi’s Detention

KAILASAHAR: The Kailasahar District Congress laid siege to the local police station on Wednesday, protesting the alleged police crackdown on students participating in the ongoing agitation in Delhi and the detention of several leaders, including Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi.

Kailasahar MLA Birajit Sinha and District Congress President Badruzzaman led the demonstration, joined by a large number of party leaders and workers who gathered at the police station raising slogans against the central government.

Addressing the gathering, MLA Sinha alleged that the government was resorting to repressive measures instead of addressing the students’ legitimate demands, terming the approach a violation of democratic values. He further accused the authorities of undermining the right to peaceful protest guaranteed under the Constitution.

The District Congress unit appealed to the government to take the students’ demands seriously and initiate a dialogue to resolve the ongoing impasse, rather than resorting to coercive action.

The gherao created a brief spell of tension in the area, with heavy sloganeering and a heated atmosphere near the police station premises. However, prompt police deployment ensured that the situation was brought under control without any untoward incident being reported.
