Illegal Sand Mining Washes Away Key Mohanpur–Sonai Road, Villagers Demand Urgent Repair

Mohanpur : A major stretch of the road connecting Mohanpur to Sonai in the No. 1 Simna Assembly constituency has collapsed into the Sonai river, cutting off a vital route for residents of the Esrai area under Hezamara Block, Mohanpur subdivision. The washed-out portion, located in Esrai Shanti Para, has left the local population in severe distress, with commuters forced to find alternative, longer routes.

Local residents allege that unchecked illegal sand mining along the riverbank is the primary cause behind the road’s collapse. They pointed out that the affected stretch is also used regularly by local MDC Rabindra Debbarma, whose residence lies in the same area, adding to questions over the alleged silence around the illegal sand ghats operating nearby.

Villagers have squarely questioned the roles of local MLA and state minister Brishaketu Debbarma, MDC Rabindra Debbarma, and the Mohanpur subdivisional and block administrations, accusing them of failing to check the illegal sand extraction that has damaged the road.

Speaking to the media, residents demanded that authorities take immediate steps to reconstruct the road before the situation worsens further, warning of complete isolation of the area if action is delayed.
