AGARTALA: The Tripura High Court has convicted a sub-inspector of East Agartala police station for carrying out an illegal arrest in violation of Supreme Court guidelines, imposing a fine of Rs 2,000 on the officer.
The court found Sub-Inspector Saikat Dey guilty following a complaint that he had allegedly arrested a person without valid grounds a few days earlier, brought him to East Agartala police station, and subjected him to sexual assault while in custody.
The High Court’s order comes as a significant indictment of procedural lapses within the state police, reaffirming that arrests carried out in disregard of established Supreme Court safeguards will attract judicial action.
