Gomati Hydel Gets a Second Wind: ₹100 Crore Revival Begins in December

AGARTALA: Tripura Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath said the state has set a target of restoring the old Dumboor hydropower plant to generate 10 to 11 MW, with an investment of Rs 100 crore. He announced this at a Community Awareness Programme on Dam Safety at the Gumti Hydro Electric Project in Tirthamukh, Gomati district.

“The work will begin this December,” the minister said. The start date was reported by UNI as subject to completion of technical assessments and preparatory work.

The plant, the state’s only hydroelectric power station, suffered extensive damage in the devastating floods of 2024. Before the flood it generated around 5 MW, and it was shut down afterwards.

To plan the revival, the state commissioned an assessment involving NIT, IIT Guwahati, BHEL and NHPC. An underwater robot was brought from Kerala to inspect the condition of the dam and its structures.

The revival also makes economic sense. TSECL says power from the plant costs Rs 3.86 per unit, against about Rs 5.90 from gas-based plants in the state.
