DHARMANAGAR: A dispute over vehicle fare and goods transport charges at Naya Para Motor Stand here on Monday allegedly turned violent, with a local businessman claiming he was assaulted and robbed by auto drivers and stand workers, triggering tension in the area.
The victim was identified as Shovam Deb. According to the complainant, an argument broke out with the driver and some workers at the stand over the cost of hiring a vehicle and transporting his goods. The situation reportedly escalated suddenly, with several people allegedly ganging up and beating him severely. During the assault, his wallet and mobile phone were allegedly forcibly snatched from his pocket.
Deb protested at the spot, and local traders and residents reportedly gathered in his support, leading to a complete standstill of traffic on the road adjoining Naya Para Motor Stand and causing severe congestion.
On receiving information, a large police contingent from Dharmanagar police station rushed to the scene. Officers worked for a prolonged period to pacify the agitated crowd before restoring normal traffic movement.
No arrests have been reported so far, and police have not issued an official statement confirming the allegations. An investigation is expected to follow based on any formal complaint lodged by the victim.
