AGARTALA: A 60-year-old widow has accused her son and daughter-in-law of years of physical and mental abuse, culminating in an incident this week in which she was allegedly beaten and thrown out of her home. The case has been reported from the Charipara area near Nabo Digonto Club, South Badharghat, under Amtali police station.
The woman, Lakshmi Rani Sarkar, whose husband died 8-10 years ago, alleges that her son, Sajal Sarkar, and daughter-in-law, Mousumi Das Sarkar, assaulted her on Tuesday, striking her with a stick and pulling her hair. She further alleges she was then barred from re-entering her late husband’s house and has since taken shelter at her daughters’ homes.
Speaking to reporters, Sarkar said she never expected such treatment from her only son and alleged that her old-age pension is being used by the couple without her being cared for in return.
On Wednesday, she filed a written complaint at Amtali police station against her son and daughter-in-law. Police said the matter would be investigated and appropriate action taken based on the findings.
The incident has renewed questions over support mechanisms for elderly abuse victims in the state.
