AGARTALA: A documentary on the 1975 Emergency, described by organisers as a dark chapter in India’s democratic history, was screened on Thursday at a programme titled “Samvidhan Hatya Diwas” (Constitution Murder Day), held at Nazrul Kalakshetra here.
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha and BJP state president Abhishek Debroy were among those present at the event, along with several other dignitaries and party leaders.
The documentary traced the imposition of the Emergency in 1975, when fundamental rights were suspended and press freedom curtailed, an event widely regarded as one of the most controversial periods in independent India’s political history.
“Samvidhan Hatya Diwas” is observed by the BJP to mark the anniversary of the Emergency’s imposition, with the party describing the day as a reminder of what it calls an attack on India’s constitutional and democratic values during that period.
Speaking at the event, leaders reportedly reflected on the significance of safeguarding democratic institutions and constitutional rights, drawing parallels with the lessons of that period for present times.
