Agartala: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha and Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Friday, ahead of the September 28 Village Committee elections under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC).
The nearly 90-minute meeting, held at Shah’s residence, was also attended by BJP’s Northeast Coordinator Sambit Patra and senior officials of the Union Home Ministry. Counting of votes for the TTAADC polls is scheduled for October 5.
According to sources, Shah assured the Tipra Motha leadership that the Tripartite Accord would be implemented in two phases, with land rights for indigenous people to be granted within September under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. The Centre is expected to provide the necessary land rights documents as part of the process.
The discussions also touched on measures to protect the identity and interests of Tripura’s indigenous tribal population, and on working out a possible seat-sharing arrangement between the BJP and Tipra Motha for the upcoming local body polls.
Saha, in a social media post, described the talks as “fruitful and constructive,” without elaborating further on specific outcomes.
