AGARTALA: A road blockade on the Udaipur-Amarpur road in Gomati district was withdrawn on Wednesday after police detained two persons in connection with the firing at a candidate in Gamaria during the Village Committee (VC) elections on Monday.
Tipra Motha workers had blocked the road, demanding the immediate arrest of those accused in the attack on the party’s candidate. Senior officials held talks with the party leaders and assured them that time-bound action would be taken against those involved. Following the assurance, the workers cleared the road and vehicular movement resumed.
Police confirmed that two persons have been detained so far. “The situation is now under control. The blockade has been withdrawn,” a police official said.
However, MLA Ranjit Debbarma has issued a fresh 72-hour deadline for police to arrest the remaining accused, keeping the spotlight on the progress of the investigation.
Meanwhile, the administration has imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) in the area amid tension. The next steps taken by police will determine whether the calm holds.
