Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been conferred Seychelles’ highest environmental honour — ‘Guardian of the Blue Horizon’ — in recognition of his leadership in environmental conservation, ocean protection, and sustainable development. The award was presented during his ongoing three‑day visit to the island nation, marking a significant moment in India–Seychelles relations and India’s wider engagement with Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
The Presidential Citation praised Modi’s long‑standing support for climate‑vulnerable nations, highlighting India’s initiatives on renewable energy, disaster resilience, and responsible ocean resource management. It also acknowledged India’s role in championing global climate action through platforms such as the International Solar Alliance and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure.
Seychelles President Patrick Herminie commended India’s efforts to strengthen environmental partnerships across the Indian Ocean Region, noting that cooperation with India has helped boost local capacity in areas such as coastal surveillance, marine ecosystem protection, and climate‑resilient infrastructure.
Modi dedicated the honour to global climate action, expressing gratitude to the people and government of Seychelles. He emphasised that safeguarding oceans and island ecosystems is a shared responsibility and reaffirmed India’s commitment to supporting SIDS through technology, financing, and capacity building.
The award comes a day after Modi planted a Coco de Mer sapling at the National Botanical Garden as part of the Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam initiative, symbolising India’s push for environmental stewardship. His visit also includes discussions on maritime security, blue‑economy cooperation, and development partnerships.
Analysts say the honour reflects India’s growing stature as a global climate leader, especially among island nations facing rising sea levels and ecological threats. It also reinforces India’s strategic outreach in the Indian Ocean, where environmental diplomacy and maritime cooperation increasingly intersect.
