THIRUVANANTHAPURAM — Heavy rains have wreaked havoc across Kerala, triggering severe landslides, mudslides, and sudden flash floods. The relentless downpour has claimed at least nine lives, leaving several others missing and forcing emergency evacuations across multiple districts.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for several districts, including Idukki and Kottayam, warning of continued heavy to very heavy rainfall and strong winds. High-range areas have borne the brunt of the weather fury. In Idukki, a devastating landslide buried a plantation shed, killing two siblings. Meanwhile, in Malappuram, sudden flash floods in the Kottapuzha River swept away local residents, prompting a massive search and rescue operation downstream.
Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan visited the disaster-affected zones in Malappuram on Monday to assess the situation. The state government has ordered hourly situation reviews and directed district authorities to accelerate evacuations from landslide-prone hills and overflowing riverbanks. Emergency rescue teams, alongside local volunteers, are working around the clock to clear debris and relocate stranded families to safer relief camps. Residents have been strongly advised to restrict unnecessary travel.
