India Successfully Test-Fires Agni-4 Ballistic Missile from Odisha

India on Thursday successfully test-fired the Medium Range Ballistic Missile (MRBM) Agni-4 from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur in Odisha, the Ministry of Defence said, in a launch that validated all operational and technical parameters of the system.

The trial was conducted under the aegis of the Strategic Forces Command, the tri-service formation responsible for the operational control of India’s strategic arsenal. “Medium Range Ballistic Missile ‘Agni-4’ was successfully test-fired from the Integrated Test Range, Chandipur in Odisha on August 06, 2026. The launch validated all operational and technical parameters,” the Ministry said in a statement posted on X by its spokesperson.

Agni-4 is a two-stage, surface-to-surface missile powered by a solid-fuel rocket motor, with a strike range of up to 4,000 kilometres. Originally developed as an upgraded version of the Agni-II Prime, the missile first flew successfully in November 2011 from what is now Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the Odisha coast, and has since undergone repeated trials in the years that followed to validate its full-range performance, road-mobile launch configuration and guidance accuracy. It was subsequently inducted into the Strategic Forces Command following user trials, and defence officials described Thursday’s launch as a routine validation exercise reaffirming the system’s operational maturity.

The test comes amid a broader pattern of missile trials by India through 2026. Earlier this year, the country also conducted successful tests of the Agni-Prime and Agni-3 missiles from the same Odisha coast, reflecting sustained emphasis on maintaining readiness across the Agni series of nuclear-capable ballistic missiles developed indigenously by the Defence Research and Development Organisation.

The Ministry of Defence framed the Agni-4 trial as part of India’s ongoing efforts to strengthen strategic deterrence and ensure the continued combat readiness of its missile forces.
