Tensions in West Asia escalated sharply on Thursday as Iran launched attacks on US military facilities in Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain, responding to a second consecutive day of US airstrikes on Iranian targets. The developments come amid a rapidly widening conflict centred around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical energy corridors.
Hours earlier, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) carried out fresh strikes on Iranian air‑defence sites, coastal radar systems and strategic leverage points. Washington said the operations were retaliation for Iranian attacks on commercial shipping and were aimed at degrading Iran’s ability to threaten global trade routes.
Iran’s response was immediate. The Revolutionary Guards claimed responsibility for strikes on multiple US bases across the Gulf, with explosions reported in Bahrain by journalists on the ground. Iranian cities along the Strait of Hormuz — including Bushehr, Chabahar, Bandar Abbas, Sirik, Jask and Abu Musa Island — also witnessed blasts overnight. Authorities confirmed at least one death in Iranshahr and widespread power outages in Chabahar.
The conflict is unfolding as Iran prepares to bury its slain Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in his hometown of Mashhad, following mass funeral processions attended by millions in Najaf and Karbala. The domestic turmoil has added a volatile layer to Iran’s military posture.
The strategic Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant share of global oil and LNG supplies pass, is now at the centre of international concern. Renewed hostilities have raised alarms over maritime security, global energy markets and the possibility of a broader confrontation involving regional and international powers.
NATO leaders meeting in Ankara continue to monitor the situation closely as the conflict threatens to reshape regional stability.
