Trump’s Tariffs Fuel US Factory Job Losses, Put Republican Support at Risk Ahead of Midterms

US President Donald Trump’s aggressive tariff policies are fuelling growing discontent among American manufacturers and factory workers as rising import costs, job losses, and economic uncertainty threaten Republican political support ahead of the upcoming November 3 midterm elections.

With less than a month remaining before the key vote, recent public opinion polling indicates that Trump’s trade strategy is proving to be a significant political gamble. A clear majority of US adults express strong disapproval of his trade measures. Furthermore, more than 64% of respondents state that the administration has gone too far with its latest tariffs—a notable increase from the 58% recorded in January.

When Trump returned to the White House in January 2025, he promised that imposing higher tariffs on foreign imported goods would revive domestic manufacturing and bring industrial jobs back to the United States. However, elevated operational expenses and retaliatory trade pressures have placed heavy strains on domestic production.

As manufacturing communities deal with the unintended financial fallout, voter dissatisfaction over trade policy poses a direct risk to Republican candidates contesting key seats in the midterms. Despite the mounting political pushback and widespread disapproval from the electorate, President Trump continues to defend the use of import duties as an essential tool for protecting American industries.
