Iran completes Chabahar–Zahedan railway, giving India a major boost in access to Central Asia

Iran has completed construction of the long‑awaited Chabahar–Zahedan railway line, a strategic infrastructure project that could significantly strengthen India’s trade connectivity with Central Asia and beyond. The rail link connects the Port of Chabahar on Iran’s southeastern coast with Zahedan, near the Iran‑Afghanistan border, creating a crucial transport corridor into the heart of Eurasia.

The project is widely seen as a milestone for regional connectivity. For India, it offers a land route that bypasses Pakistan and provides direct access to markets in Afghanistan, Central Asia, and potentially Russia and Europe through broader international transport networks. Chabahar has long held strategic importance for New Delhi because it serves as an alternative gateway to the region, reducing dependence on traditional transit routes.

The railway is expected to improve the movement of containers, bulk cargo, agricultural products and industrial goods. Trade experts believe it could reduce transport costs and transit times while enhancing the commercial viability of the International North–South Transport Corridor (INSTC), a multi‑country initiative linking India with Eurasia through Iran.

The completion comes at a time when countries across Asia are investing heavily in logistics and transport infrastructure to strengthen supply chains and economic resilience. Iranian officials have described the railway as a key part of the country’s ambition to become a regional transit hub connecting the Persian Gulf, South Asia and Central Asia.

For India, the development may open fresh opportunities for exporters looking to reach landlocked markets. Sectors such as pharmaceuticals, engineering goods, textiles and agricultural products could benefit from improved connectivity.

Strategic analysts also note that the project carries geopolitical significance. Greater connectivity through Chabahar strengthens India’s presence in a region where infrastructure competition has intensified in recent years.

While operational details and cargo schedules are still expected to be finalised, the completion of the Chabahar–Zahedan railway marks an important step toward reshaping trade routes across Eurasia and enhancing India’s long‑term economic engagement with Central Asia.
