India, serving as the 2026 BRICS Chair, has officially invited Russia to participate in the 18th BRICS Summit, scheduled for 12–13 September in New Delhi. The confirmation comes as preparations intensify for what is expected to be one of the most significant diplomatic events of the year, bringing together leaders from the expanded 11‑member BRICS bloc along with several outreach partners.
According to reports cited by Russian agency TASS, New Delhi has already extended the formal invitation to Moscow. A senior government source stated that “the invitation to the BRICS summit has been sent to Russia,” signalling India’s intent to ensure full participation from all member states despite ongoing geopolitical tensions globally.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said preparations are progressing at “full pace,” with India coordinating logistics, security arrangements, and agenda‑setting discussions. The summit is expected to focus on economic cooperation, digital public infrastructure, energy security, reform of global governance institutions, and strengthening South‑South partnerships.
This year’s summit carries added weight as BRICS—now expanded beyond its original five members—continues to position itself as a counterbalance to Western‑led economic frameworks. India’s role as host places it at the centre of shaping the bloc’s next‑decade vision, especially amid shifting global alignments and rising interest from countries seeking to join or partner with BRICS.
The summit also comes during a period of intense diplomatic activity for India, with multiple high‑level engagements planned across August and September. Analysts say New Delhi aims to leverage its chairmanship to highlight its leadership in the Global South and strengthen ties with major partners, including Russia.
