Ethiopia has described India as one of its most important international partners as tensions continue in parts of the Horn of Africa, underscoring the growing strategic relationship between the two countries.
In an interview with Firstpost, Ethiopia’s Chargé d’Affaires in New Delhi, Ambassador Nebiyu Tedla, said Ethiopia remains committed to dialogue and peaceful cooperation despite renewed tensions in northern parts of the country. At the same time, he stressed that Ethiopia retains the right to defend its sovereignty and national interests when necessary.
Tedla noted that Addis Ababa has briefed India and other friendly nations on the evolving security situation and expressed appreciation for New Delhi’s support. According to him, India has shown solidarity with Ethiopia during a challenging period and continues to be viewed as a trusted partner in development and diplomacy.
The envoy highlighted the long-standing ties between the two countries, pointing out that Ethiopia was among the first African nations to establish formal diplomatic relations with India. Those ties have expanded considerably in recent years, covering trade, investment, education, healthcare, technology and capacity-building programmes.
“Our relations were elevated to a strategic partnership in December 2025,” Tedla said, adding that Indian companies are making significant contributions to Ethiopia’s economy across several sectors. He emphasised that both countries are working to transform their traditional friendship into a deeper and more practical partnership.
Tedla also referred to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s recent visit to Ethiopia, during which discussions focused on expanding cooperation and strengthening bilateral engagement. According to the envoy, leaders from both countries share a commitment to broadening collaboration in areas of mutual interest.
The interview comes at a time when Ethiopia is navigating complex regional dynamics in the Horn of Africa while pursuing economic development and greater regional connectivity. Analysts say India’s growing engagement reflects its broader strategy of strengthening partnerships across Africa through trade, investment and diplomatic cooperation.
As geopolitical competition intensifies in the region, Ethiopia believes its partnership with India can play a constructive role in supporting stability, economic growth and long-term development for both countries.
