China has once again thrown its weight behind Bangladesh’s Teesta River Comprehensive Management and Restoration Project (TRCMRP), signalling fresh momentum after Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s recent visit to Beijing. During meetings with President Xi Jinping, Premier Li Qiang, and Water Resources Minister Li Guoying, both sides agreed to accelerate the technical feasibility study, a step that pushes the long‑discussed project closer to implementation.
Beijing insists the initiative is purely developmental — aimed at improving livelihoods, irrigation, flood control, and river management in northern Bangladesh. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said China‑Bangladesh cooperation “does not target any third party” and should remain free from external influence. The Teesta restoration, he added, is an “important development programme” for Bangladesh, and China is ready to support it.
But for India, the project’s geography makes it impossible to ignore. The Teesta basin lies close to the Siliguri Corridor — the narrow, strategically vital stretch connecting mainland India to the Northeast. Any large‑scale Chinese‑backed infrastructure near this corridor naturally raises security sensitivities in New Delhi. India has long been wary of expanding Chinese footprints in South Asia, especially through state‑owned enterprises involved in river, port, and transport projects.
India is also concerned about the hydrological impact. The Teesta is a shared river, and any major intervention — embankments, dredging, water diversion, or flood‑control structures — could affect downstream flow into West Bengal. India and Bangladesh have struggled for years to finalise a bilateral Teesta water‑sharing agreement, making China’s involvement an added layer of complexity.
Analysts say the renewed push reflects China’s broader strategy of deepening influence in Bangladesh through connectivity corridors, river projects, and port upgrades. For Bangladesh, the Teesta plan promises economic uplift. For India, it is a strategic development that demands close monitoring.
