KAILASAHAR — High tension prevailed at Mailong ADC Village under Chandipur Block on Monday as angry residents locked up the local panchayat office and staged a day-long demonstration. The protest was triggered by allegations that the Panchayat Secretary and other officials have been executing development projects using government funds without consulting the community or conducting mandatory Gram Sabhas (village council meetings).
The protest began at 10:00 AM, completely halting office operations. Villagers claimed that despite multiple prior complaints regarding a total lack of transparency, authorities had ignored their grievances.
Responding to the escalating situation, a civil administration team—including Kailashahar Deputy Magistrates Moti Ranjan Debbarma and Sanjib Debbarma, alongside Chandipur BDO Devpriya Das—rushed to the spot, backed by a large contingent of Police and Tripura State Rifles (TSR) forces.
Following intense negotiations with the protestors, a resolution was reached at 5:00 PM. All ongoing development works will remain suspended until June 10, when a formal Gram Sabha will be convened to openly brief residents. While protestors claimed the movement was apolitical, a Tipra Motha flag was spotted on the office lock, and local party leaders Bipul Debbarma and Biresh Debbarma spearheaded the talks with officials. Normal office work has since resumed.
