DHARMNAGAR: Left-wing organisations, including CITU, burnt an effigy of the Chief Election Commissioner at Kadamtala on Friday night, protesting the deletion of names from the voter list.
Carrying red flags, protesters gathered in the busy market area, raised slogans against the Election Commission and set the effigy ablaze.
The protest in North Tripura echoes demonstrations elsewhere in the country. A newspaper investigation last month alleged impropriety during a large-scale voter-roll revision that has struck millions of names from the lists. The Election Commission has rejected the allegations of wrongdoing. Opposition parties are demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Protesters in Kadamtala voiced similar anger over the removal of names from the rolls.
