AGARTALA: TIPRA Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarman has reaffirmed his decision to step away from active politics, while saying he will continue to work for the growth and development of the indigenous community.
Debbarman, whose party is an ally of the ruling BJP, made the remarks during a Facebook live session on September 19. He expressed disappointment with the present political climate and said many leaders put self-interest ahead of principles and ideology. In his view, politicians today are often more concerned with staying close to power than with holding to a set of values.
The announcement is not the first of its kind. Before the 2023 Assembly elections, he had said he would quit politics after the polls. He later resigned as party chairman, a post that was subsequently abolished. A day after leaving it, he clarified that he would remain in politics and work for the party as an ordinary member.
Debbarman’s latest statement has again raised questions about the future role of the former royal scion in the tribal-based party he founded.
