Poll Turns Perilous: Tipra Motha Candidate Shot at Warengbari During Village Committee Election

Udaipur: A Tipra Motha Party (TMP) candidate was seriously injured in an alleged firing at Warengbari in Gomati district on Monday, during polling for the Village Committees under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC).

The incident took place around 2 pm near the Warengbari polling centre, under the Maharani police outpost in Udaipur subdivision. Police sources identified the injured candidate as Khachindra Reang, who reportedly sustained a bullet-like injury to his waist. He received initial treatment at a hospital in Udaipur. At least two others were also injured.

State police spokesperson Rajdeep Deb said the shooting was carried out by unknown miscreants. Chief Minister Manik Saha said he had been informed of the incident. Gomati District Magistrate Rinku Lather and senior police officials reached the spot with a large security contingent.

TMP supporters alleged that the confrontation began when activists of a rival party tried to enter the polling station. The claim has not been verified by police.

Tension spread after the shooting, and clashes broke out later at Gamaria. Gomati SP Anirban Das, who denied rumours that the candidate had died, was injured in that violence.

Police have launched an investigation. No arrests had been reported at the time of filing.
