AGARTALA: A driver was allegedly assaulted and robbed by a club secretary and several others at Dashamighat here, following a dispute during an idol immersion, his family has alleged.
According to the family, driver Jalfu Mia, a resident of Charipara, had driven to Dashamighat around 10 pm to immerse an idol. After the idol was unloaded, his vehicle allegedly grazed club secretary Mithun while being reversed, sparking the confrontation.
The family alleged that Jalfu Mia was then dragged to the club premises, where several youths tied his hands and feet and beat him. He was also allegedly robbed of Rs 5,000 in cash and his mobile phone. When he initially refused to unlock the phone, he was beaten again, allegedly breaking his hand, before the device was taken.
Police reportedly found him unconscious on the riverbank around 2 am and rushed him to IGM Hospital. Owing to his deteriorating condition, he was later shifted to TMC Hospital and subsequently to GB Hospital.
The family has approached West Agartala police station seeking a case against the accused, a thorough investigation, and justice from the Chief Minister. The club authorities are yet to respond to the allegations. Police investigation is awaited to establish the facts.
