NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha said Tripura has achieved a zero dropout rate at the primary school level (Classes I-V) in the 2025-26 academic year, attributing the achievement to sustained efforts to strengthen foundational literacy across the state.
Addressing the International Literacy Day and ULLAS Mela 2026 event in New Delhi, Saha said the primary-level dropout rate, which stood at 2.21 per cent in 2013-14, has now been brought down to zero. He added that the government remains committed to reducing dropout rates at the secondary level as well, within the next three to four years.
To tackle low enrolment in government schools in remote and rural areas, Saha said the state is planning to establish residential schools on the pattern of Eklavya Model Schools by merging institutions with very low student strength.
Highlighting Tripura’s literacy rate of 95.6 per cent, Saha said the state has crossed the Centre’s benchmark for being declared fully literate under the ULLAS programme, which has been implemented since May 2022.
Union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi, Minister of State Jayant Chaudhary, and education ministers from several other states were present at the event.
