MELAGHAR: A gang of thieves broke into a locked house in the Char area of Melaghar and decamped with gold and silver ornaments along with cash, taking advantage of the homeowner’s absence.
According to local sources, Minati Saha, wife of the late Subhash Saha, had gone to a relative’s house in Bishalgarh for a family matter and was not at home at the time. The thieves used a stick to unlatch the inner bolt of the back door and entered the house quietly.
Once inside, they ransacked cupboards and boxes, making off with gold and silver jewellery along with cash kept in the house. The gang also attempted to steal a cooking gas cylinder but abandoned it at the rear of the house while fleeing, for reasons yet unknown.
Neighbours discovered the theft the following morning and alerted Minati Saha, who was still away. Police were subsequently informed and reached the spot to begin an investigation.
The incident has caused considerable alarm among residents of the otherwise quiet Char locality, with many expressing concern over the rising number of such burglaries targeting empty homes in the area.
