China’s humanoid robots break speed records — but can they handle real factory and warehouse work?

China’s rapidly advancing humanoid robotics sector is drawing global attention after machines at the World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing shattered human sprint records — yet the bigger question now is whether these robots can translate athletic performance into practical industrial capability.

The five‑day event featured 51 competitions, including 30 sports events and 21 scenario‑based tests simulating factories, restaurants, offices and emergency situations. More than 40% of the contests required full autonomy, pushing robots to navigate tasks without human control. Organisers say the goal is to determine whether robots that excel in speed, balance and coordination can also perform warehouse operations, EV charging, packaging, cable‑connecting, and precision assembly.

The headline‑grabbing moment came when two humanoid robots ran the 100‑metre sprint faster than Usain Bolt’s 9.58‑second world record, a dramatic leap from 2025 when the winning robot took over 20 seconds. Braking remains a challenge — several machines slammed into thick mats placed beyond the finish line. Another robot completed 400 metres in 39.7 seconds, beating Wayde van Niekerk’s human world record of 43.03 seconds.

But engineers caution that speed doesn’t equal usefulness. Industrial environments demand reliability, fine motor control, safe interaction with humans, and long‑duration performance — areas where humanoid robots still lag behind specialised industrial machines. The Games’ scenario‑based tests aim to evaluate whether these robots can eventually replace or assist human workers in logistics hubs, factories and service industries.

China sees humanoid robotics as a strategic frontier, linking AI, manufacturing and national competitiveness. Whether these record‑breaking machines can evolve into dependable labour‑force tools remains the next big test.
