Agartala: The CPI(M) Sadar Sub-Division Committee on Friday submitted a memorandum to the Director of Food and Civil Supplies, protesting the unchecked rise in prices of essential commodities and persistent problems in the public distribution system.
The memorandum drew attention to the hardship faced by common people due to steep price hikes in rice, pulses, edible oil, sugar, onion, garlic, spices, and vegetables. The party demanded stricter market monitoring to check prices, a crackdown on black-marketing, supply of essential goods at subsidised rates through ration shops, and assurance of proper quantity and quality of ration items.
Addressing the issue, CPI(M) leader Amal alleged that the government was failing to protect the interests of the common people, citing its handling of the sugar supply as a specific example of administrative shortcomings. He said sustained public pressure was necessary to hold the government accountable and push for corrective measures.
Party leaders said they would continue to monitor the situation and escalate their agitation if the demands raised in the memorandum are not addressed promptly by the department.
