Agartala: The All India Lawyers Union, Tripura State Committee, staged a protest on Friday demanding the removal of Bar Council of India (BCI) Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra. Held at the western gate of Agartala George Court, the demonstration was part of a coordinated nationwide programme by the union.
The union alleged that power in the statutory body has long remained concentrated in the hands of a single individual, with collective decision-making by the Council giving way to individual-centric authority. It further claimed that irresponsible remarks made regarding the recent student movement have caused concern within the legal fraternity.
Union leaders specifically cited the BCI’s August 13 directive refusing to register the names of the 2026 batch of students from the National Academy of Legal Studies and Research, saying the move has raised questions over the body’s democratic and institutional character.
Against this backdrop, the protest was organised to press for safeguarding the BCI’s independence, its democratic functioning, and a return to collective decision-making within the Council. The union said the agitation would continue as part of its nationwide campaign until the demand is addressed.
