AGARTALA: Various groups of surrendered militants have announced plans to block roads and railway tracks again on August 28, expressing anger after failing to secure a meeting with Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma at the Secretariat here.
The renewed threat follows a pattern of unresolved grievances over rehabilitation commitments made under the 2024 tripartite peace accord signed between the Centre, the state government, and former insurgent outfits including the NLFT and ATTF. A previous blockade by surrendered militants at Jirania on August 18 had caused disruption before being withdrawn on assurances from the state government, with the delegation reportedly told the Chief Minister would meet them after Independence Day. That meeting has yet to take place.
The groups have previously submitted a nine-point charter of demands to Chief Minister Manik Saha, the Tribal Welfare Minister, the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, alleging that issues surrounding their rehabilitation have remained unresolved for over three decades since their surrender.
