Several injured after Lufthansa Boeing 787 nose gear collapses at Frankfurt Airport

A routine turnaround at Frankfurt Airport turned into a serious safety incident on Thursday when the nose landing gear of a Lufthansa Boeing 787‑9 suddenly collapsed at a gate, injuring several crew and ground staff. The aircraft, scheduled to operate Flight LH450 to Los Angeles, was parked at the terminal when the front gear gave way, causing the jet’s nose to drop and rest partially on its belly.

According to Lufthansa, no passengers had boarded at the time of the collapse. Only crew members and ground personnel were inside the aircraft, several of whom sustained injuries and are now receiving medical treatment. Emergency response teams rushed to the scene, surrounding the aircraft with fire and rescue vehicles as authorities secured the area.

The incident occurred at 12:45 pm local time (1045 GMT). Lufthansa said it is working closely with aviation authorities to determine the exact cause of the failure. The airline emphasised that safety remains its top priority and that a full technical investigation is underway.

The Boeing 787‑9 involved is part of Lufthansa’s newer long‑haul fleet, acquired as part of a broader modernisation strategy aimed at replacing older, less fuel‑efficient aircraft. The airline has been expanding its Dreamliner fleet to streamline operations and reduce emissions, making Thursday’s mechanical failure particularly concerning for regulators and industry observers.

Images from the scene showed the aircraft tilted forward with its nose touching the ground, while emergency crews assessed structural damage. Frankfurt Airport operations continued, but the affected gate area was cordoned off.

The incident has raised questions about potential technical issues, maintenance procedures, or component failures, though officials caution that it is too early to draw conclusions.
