Bishramganj, Aug 17: A fish trader was allegedly attacked, robbed and assaulted by four unidentified persons while returning home after attending a Padma Purana recitation late Sunday night, police said.
The victim, identified as Bikash Dutta of South Charilam, was reportedly waylaid around 12:30 am at the junction of South Charilam and Kori Mura road under Bishramganj police station. According to the complaint, four persons with their faces covered with gamchhas and allegedly armed with iron rods accosted him, snatched his money, beat him up and left him in a nearby field.
The incident has caused widespread concern in the Charilam area, with residents and club members saying such an attack is unprecedented in the locality. Rahul Sarkar, a member of Puranbari Club, and Dutta himself told reporters that nothing of this nature had occurred in Charilam before.
Police are learnt to be investigating the incident, though no arrests have been reported so far. Efforts are underway to identify the assailants.
