KANTHALIA (SIPAHIJALA): A large monocled cobra was rescued from the residence of Noni Dutta in Kanthalia Gaon Sabha under Kanthalia Panchayat, in an operation carried out by the Animal Aid Alliance Welfare Society.
Snake rescuers Asim Majumder and Lokai Dey, both based in Kanthalia, Sipahijala district, carried out the rescue. According to the rescuers, this was the largest monocled cobra — a highly venomous species — they had handled to date.
The duo have reportedly rescued around 300 snakes so far, relocating them from residential areas to forest habitats in the interest of ecological balance. Yatrapur Police Station’s officer-in-charge Prarthanath Bhoumik and Sub-Inspector Prasenjit Debnath assisted in the release operation, providing their vehicle to transport the rescuers and the snake to Trishna Wildlife Sanctuary, where it was set free.
The rescue drew a large crowd and stirred considerable curiosity in the locality, with residents questioning how a cobra of such size had turned up in a densely populated area. Locals commended the two rescuers for their efforts.
