GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday termed the border firing incident in Dhemaji district a “localised conflict” with “nothing to do with the state as such,” saying the situation was almost amicably resolved through talks between the two states.
At least 18 people were injured, four of them critically, after a firing incident at Mingmang Basti along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border, reportedly triggered by a confrontation linked to allegations of land encroachment. The critically injured were shifted to Assam Medical College and Hospital in Dibrugarh for treatment.
Sarma said the Assam government had deputed Education Minister Ranoj Pegu to hold talks with the Arunachal side, with the DGP and Chief Secretary also in touch with their counterparts. He also directed the police force to ensure Assam did not “lose even an inch” of its land.
The tension followed an earlier shooting involving a Mising youth near Kangku Circle in Arunachal’s Lower Siang district, which escalated into a confrontation between residents of Dhemaji and Lower Siang, with reports of heightened tension between Mising and Galo communities.
A joint inter-state boundary survey involving both state governments and the Survey of India began in May 2026 covering Lower Siang and Dhemaji sectors.
