AGARTALA: Leaders of CITU, AIKS, GMP and the Tripura Khetmajoor Union claimed the day’s jail-bharo movement drew thousands of participants across 20 locations in eight districts, describing it as one of the largest mobilisations in recent years.
CITU state general secretary Shankar Prasad Dutta said the protest reflected anger against the government’s failures, adding that state committee secretary Samar Chakraborty was injured and would require surgery, while a student participant was also hurt and hospitalised. He warned of further agitation if the government failed to take heed.
AIKS state secretary Pabitra Kar said large numbers of women and farmers joined despite competing farm work, and alleged the police’s barricading near a private nursing home was ill-intentioned. GMP general secretary Radhacharan Debbarma said the response spanned ADC and non-ADC areas alike, involving jhumias, labourers, students and farmers.
Khetmajoor Union secretary Shyamal Dey put participation at over 25,000. CITU state president Manik Dey called it a peaceful mass expression of public anger, alleging a decline in rule of law and rising corruption, and signalled bigger movements — including a call for change of government — in the days ahead.
