AGARTALA: A jail-bharo (fill-the-jails) movement rocked the capital on Monday as four mass organisations took to the streets over an 11-point charter of demands concerning workers, farmers, agricultural labourers and the common people, protesting what they termed the government’s anti-people policies.
The agitation, held in line with similar programmes across the country, was jointly organised by CITU, Krishak Sabha, Tribal Ganamukti Parishad, and the Tripura Khetmajoor Union.
Marching from Orient Chowmuhani, protesters broke through police barricades at Agartala Post Office Chowmuhani and staged a civil disobedience demonstration in defiance of prohibitory orders.
Former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury, Manik Dey, and Pabitra Kar were among those who joined the demonstration, lending weight to the day’s protest.
The jail-bharo programme forms part of a nationwide mobilisation effort by Left and allied organisations, pressing the Centre and state governments on issues ranging from labour rights to farmer welfare, as the four bodies vowed to continue their agitation until their demands are met.
