AGARTALA: Tripura University organised a day-long programme on Tuesday to mark the 12th National Handloom Day 2026, featuring a quiz competition and awareness sessions aimed at students.
The event was designed to sensitise Tripura University students about the significance of handloom and the handicraft sector, while also guiding them on how they can build careers and skills in the field going forward.
As part of the programme, a quiz competition was held to test and enhance students’ knowledge about handloom traditions and their relevance today. University officials reportedly used the occasion to highlight the cultural and economic importance of India’s handloom heritage, particularly in the context of Northeast India’s rich weaving traditions.
Speakers at the event are said to have encouraged students to explore opportunities in the handloom sector, from design innovation to entrepreneurship, as the industry continues to evolve.
National Handloom Day is observed annually on August 7 to honour the handloom weaving community and promote the handloom industry across the country. This year’s edition marks the 12th anniversary of the observance, which was first introduced in 2015.
