BISHRAMGANJ: A CNG auto-rickshaw was stolen from the veranda of driver Rakesh Acharya’s residence in the early hours of Sunday, just a short distance from Bishramganj police station, plunging the already struggling family into further distress.
The stolen vehicle, bearing registration number TR 07 A 2101, did not belong to Acharya. He had reportedly taken it on rent for Rs 7,000 per month from Indrajit Sarkar of the Barjala area in Bishramganj, and depended entirely on its daily earnings to support his household.
Acharya’s mother, Pushparani Acharya, has been bedridden for some time after allegedly suffering fractures to her arms and legs in an accident. The income from the auto-rickshaw was reportedly the family’s primary means of covering her care and daily expenses, making the theft a severe blow to an already vulnerable household.
Following the incident, Nitai Paul, secretary of the Bishramganj Auto Association, along with Md. Shah Alam, visited Acharya’s home to express solidarity and support.
Police are yet to comment on the case. Efforts to trace the stolen vehicle are said to be underway.
