Agartala: The Tripura Pradesh Mahila Congress staged a protest demonstration by burning effigies of newly appointed Union Education Minister Prahlad Joshi and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut, joining a wave of similar protests by the party’s women’s wing across the country.
The demonstration comes amid nationwide outrage among Congress workers over remarks attributed to Joshi and Ranaut concerning women protesters. Similar effigy-burning protests and demonstrations by Mahila Congress units have been reported in recent days from states including Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana.
Party workers in Tripura raised slogans against the two leaders, accusing them of insulting women through their statements. Mahila Congress leaders said the protest was meant to register strong objection to what they termed disrespectful remarks and demanded a public apology.
Joshi was recently inducted as India’s new Education Minister. The Congress has intensified its campaign against him and Ranaut in the days since, with women’s wing units across several states holding coordinated protests.
Local Congress leaders said further agitational programmes may follow if no clarification or apology is issued.
