KUMARGHAT: Serious allegations of corruption have surfaced against the Kumarghat police after a commercial vehicle driver publicly accused on-duty personnel of demanding an extortionate amount of money under the guise of a routine traffic check.
According to the complainant, the incident occurred while he was transporting goods through the Kumarghat area. He alleged that police officers intercepted his vehicle and, despite him presenting valid registration and permit documents, began fabricating minor traffic violations. The driver claimed that the officers then demanded a hefty cash bribe to clear his vehicle without filing an official case.
When the driver expressed his inability to pay the exorbitant sum, the police personnel allegedly threatened him with severe legal consequences and the impoundment of his vehicle. Stranded and harassed for hours, the driver eventually moved local media to highlight the ordeal.
The incident has triggered widespread outrage among local transport unions, who claim that such predatory bribery tactics have become common practice on this route. While senior police officials have promised a departmental inquiry into the matter, commercial drivers are demanding the immediate suspension of the accused personnel and strict implementation of transparent checking protocols.
