AGARTALA: Tripura Director General of Police Anurag Dhankar was found dead inside his office at the state police headquarters here on Monday, with preliminary reports suggesting suicide, officials said.
Dhankar, a 1994-batch IPS officer of the Tripura cadre, was discovered in the washroom attached to his chamber around noon. He was rushed to G B Pant Hospital, where doctors reportedly conducted CPR for nearly 48 minutes before declaring him brought dead.
Preliminary findings indicate the officer may have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, though authorities have neither confirmed nor ruled out other possibilities pending post-mortem results and further investigation.
Chief Minister Manik Saha and Chief Secretary J K Sinha visited the hospital following the incident. Former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury, and other political leaders were also reported at the scene.
Dhankar took charge as Tripura’s DGP in May 2025, succeeding Amitabh Ranjan. He previously served as the state’s Director General (Intelligence) and had earlier led high-profile investigations, including the Nirav Modi bank fraud case, during his tenure with the CBI.
Senior police officers and forensic teams have launched an investigation into the circumstances of his death.
