India’s space journey entered a transformative new phase on 18 July, when Skyroot Aerospace’s Vikram‑1 became the first privately developed Indian rocket to achieve orbital flight. The successful launch from Sriharikota marks India’s entry into the exclusive global club of nations with private orbital‑launch capability — a group previously limited to the US and China.
The achievement carries both philosophical depth and modern significance. India’s fascination with the cosmos dates back to the Rig Veda, which describes the universe as an interconnected web where earthly boundaries dissolve into the infinite. Vikram‑1’s ascent, however, reflects a distinctly contemporary milestone: the rise of a competitive private space ecosystem after decades of state monopoly.
The rocket’s test flight carried symbolic payloads, including a lab‑grown diamond and messages from the Skyroot team, while validating stage separations and critical systems. Its success showcases the impact of sweeping policy reforms that opened India’s space sector to private enterprise. The creation of IN‑SPACe (Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre), technology transfers from ISRO, and relaxed FDI norms have catalysed rapid private‑sector growth.
Skyroot, founded in 2018 by former ISRO engineers Pawan Kumar Chandana and Naga Bharath Daka, exemplifies this new era. Backed by global investors such as GIC and Temasek, the company has built Infinity, India’s largest private rocket‑manufacturing facility. Vikram‑1’s development also drew on a wider domestic ecosystem of suppliers, materials specialists, and avionics firms — signalling that India’s private space industry is maturing into a full‑fledged innovation network.
The launch positions India to compete in the booming global small‑satellite market and strengthens its long‑term ambitions in commercial spaceflight.
