KAMALPUR: In a major breakthrough against inter-state narcotics smuggling, the Kamalpur police on Sunday arrested three drug traffickers who were attempting to smuggle a massive cache of cannabis out of the state by posing as media professionals.
Acting on a specific tip-off that a large shipment of contraband was being transported from Agartala, the police team intensified vigilance and set up a strict ambush at the Durga Choumuhani Naka checkpoint. Officers intercepted a suspicious vehicle bearing an illegal “Press” sticker on its windshield—a deceptive tactic used by the smugglers to evade police scrutiny and bypass security checkpoints.
During a thorough search of the vehicle, police personnel recovered 21 kilograms and 500 grams of dry cannabis hidden inside. The three occupants, all identified as residents of Bihar, were immediately taken into custody. Upon initial interrogation, one of the accused tried to masquerade as a working journalist, but preliminary investigations quickly exposed their credentials as entirely fraudulent.
The police have seized the contraband alongside the vehicle. All three accused have been booked under stringent sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and further investigation is underway to trace the broader network.
