AGARTALA: The Agartala Hawkers’ Union election was held on Tuesday under tight security, marking the first such poll in eight years, with polling stations witnessing considerable enthusiasm among hawkers since morning.
A large contingent of police and security personnel was deployed across polling booths and surrounding areas to ensure the election was conducted peacefully and smoothly. Law enforcement maintained continuous vigilance throughout the day as voting progressed without incident.
With the long-pending election finally being held, interest among hawkers in electing new union leadership reached a high point, reflecting pent-up demand for organisational representation after years without a formal vote.
Election officials said polling was conducted in a peaceful atmosphere, and the results would be declared following the counting of votes after the conclusion of polling.
The election is expected to usher in fresh leadership for the union, which represents a significant section of Agartala’s informal trading community.
