Health authorities in Andhra Pradesh have reported two Covid‑19 deaths and eight new infections, prompting fresh monitoring across districts amid concerns that a more virulent Omicron subvariant may be circulating. The cases, detected over the past several days, mark the first Covid‑related fatalities in the state since 2022, according to officials.
Doctors say the sudden cluster has raised questions about whether a new strain is driving transmission. Several medical practitioners have warned that the pattern resembles early signs seen during previous variant‑driven surges, though they emphasise that current numbers remain too small to classify as an outbreak.
Health department officials described the infections as sporadic, noting that there is no evidence of community spread. However, neighbouring Odisha has increased surveillance and testing as a precaution, following reports of the two deaths in Andhra.
The first victim, a 60‑year‑old man, was admitted to Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) in Tirupati before being transferred to Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore. He suffered from multiple comorbidities, including diabetes and kidney disease, and died on 28 June during treatment. A post‑mortem RT‑PCR test confirmed Covid‑19 infection.
Details of the second fatality are being reviewed, but officials say both cases involved individuals with significant underlying health conditions — a factor that has historically increased vulnerability to severe Covid outcomes.
State health teams have begun contact tracing, sample sequencing, and hospital readiness checks. Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious, especially those with chronic illnesses, while reiterating that there is no indication of a wider surge at present.
