KALACHHARA: Tension gripped Kalachhara block in North Tripura on Monday after police allegedly blocked a CPI(M) march that was proceeding toward the Block Development Officer’s (BDO) office to submit a deputation over a 10-point charter of demands.
According to CPI(M), permission for the mass deputation had been sought 72 hours in advance and all due procedures were followed. The party alleged that police nonetheless obstructed the march when it reached the main part of Kalachhara Bazar, erecting barricades and halting its progress. This reportedly led to a heated exchange between police personnel and party workers before an impromptu, brief meeting was held on the spot instead of the planned deputation.
The march, organised over local development issues and public grievances, saw a large turnout of party workers, supporters and residents. Among those present were CPI(M) state secretariat member Amitabha Dutta, district secretary Abhijit Dey, sub-divisional secretary Ratan Roy, former minister Bijita Nath, MLA Shailendra Chandra Nath, district committee member Shashank Majumder and local area secretary Jainal Uddin.
Police have not yet issued an official response to the allegations.
