Sonamura:Angry residents staged a road blockade at Thakurmura Dokan Chowmuhani under Sonamura Nagar Panchayat on Sunday, protesting the long-standing poor condition of roads and severe waterlogging in the area.
Locals alleged that even light rainfall submerges the road under knee-deep water, with several roads in Sonamura town becoming unfit for movement during the monsoon. Residents said stagnant water frequently enters their homes, causing significant hardship, while some pointed out that ducks have been seen swimming in the waterlogged stretches.
Police reached the spot after the blockade began, followed by Sonamura Nagar Panchayat Vice-Chairperson Shahjahan Mia. Assuring the agitating residents, he said construction of the Kalibazar-to-Sonamura road would begin once the monsoon season ends, and that drains would be cut in the interim to help drain out accumulated water.
Following the assurance, residents withdrew the blockade. However, locals expressed skepticism, noting that similar promises in the past had not translated into lasting solutions.
