BOXANAGAR: In a striking display of self-help, residents of Putia Panchayat under Boxanagar have taken it upon themselves to repair a damaged road stretch in their locality, using their own money after prolonged administrative neglect.
Locals said the road had remained in a dilapidated condition for a considerable period, causing severe difficulties for daily commuters, students, and vehicles plying the route, particularly during the monsoon season. With repeated appeals to the authorities allegedly falling on deaf ears, residents decided to pool their own resources to carry out the repair work rather than wait any longer.
Villagers who took part in the initiative said the move was born out of sheer necessity, as the deteriorating road had become nearly impassable in several stretches. The self-funded repair has been welcomed by the wider community, with many commending the residents’ initiative while also questioning why public funds had not been utilised for the work despite it falling under the panchayat’s responsibility.
The episode has once again brought into focus the state of rural road infrastructure and the pace of civic works in panchayat areas, with residents urging authorities to take note and ensure such essential maintenance is carried out through official channels in the future.
